I said I would write a blog about Hypixel skyblock, which dominated my time during quarantine and online school.
In minecraft there's a server called Hypixel, and within that server there is a 'mini' game called Skyblock. If
you know minecraft, you definitely know skyblock. You start on an island like this with nothing but a tree and a
chest, and you try surviving with just what you have.
The difference with hypixel skyblock is you also start an island, but there's a portal to the “main world” and
the main world looks like this:
It was a minecraft MMORPG, there were 'classes' like mage, berserker, and archer, and it was a PVE gamemode. Me
and my friends got really into skyblock in 2020-21, during the lockdown when all we did was call on discord and
play games. I would be lying if I said this game wasn't super addicting and just cool in general. It's really
cool to see what they managed to do with just minecraft. The game was super based on the in-game currency coins,
so what me and my friends would do is we would farm crops in game and sell it to buy gear on the auction house.
Since it was online school at the time, I minimized the zoom meeting and would play games instead
The game was also stupidly large? Like how is it possible a game, inside of a server, of another game would have
100k concurrent players. It peaked at around 200k players on the server at once when Technoblade made his return
to skyblock. I originally got into skyblock because of him, so my friends and I were so excited about it.
To demonstrate what this game was all about, there's a weapon in the game everyone really wants to get badly,
it's called the “Hyperion.” It was a weapon mages used and you could only get it from the last and most
difficult stage of the dungeons, Floor 7. It's really hard to get and right now costs around 2 billion coins.
(In 2021 it was 300 million coins, this game has inflation too, just like your favorite MMOs.) It was stupidly
broken, you would right-click and get teleported forward, killing everything in your way. The ultimate power
trip weapon every MMO dreams of having.
Dungeons was my personal favorite part of the game. I recorded some footage of it and uploaded it here:
The iron sword in my second slot is the Hyperion, and I'm playing in third person a lot of the time since it's
way easier to see, especially since the weapon causes you to teleport forward.
Here's my profile if anyone is curious enough: Profile
At my peak I had around 11 billion coins (which wasn't even that much). Players would use discord bots to track
the value of items and their networths. The game had an entire economy with stocks and stuff. It was so crazy.
The game never really 'fell off' in the traditional sense, since it's still popular. But I started getting fed
up with the game in my freshman year of high school. I quit sometime in late 2021 (but would return for a week
or 2 in spontaneous bursts in the future). To name some shortcomings of the game: the grind (RNG), coins, and
toxicity. Someone once told me an MMO player who complains about grinding isn't an MMO player. Very funny, but
the skyblock grind was far too much.
Remember how I said the Hyperion (weapon everyone wants) was 2 billion coins? Well if you wanna get one, you
better have a money-making method. Money-making methods can range from 10 million coins/hr, to 100m+ coins/hr.
One of the most popular and easiest ways to make money is farming crops. Which can make you 10m-40m/hr depending
on your gear. So if you farm making 20m/hr, it would take you 100 hours! Farming is some of the most boring shit
ever. You literally hold down left-click and press A and D. And you know about those 100m+ money making methods
I was talking about? All of those require a hyperion, or at least billions of coins in gear just to get started.
Basically:
No fun coin making method = consistent coin. (Early game)
Fun stuff = no coin unless you get lucky.
Fun stuff + coin = need coin already.
Then let's talk about RNG. This game is terribly RNG reliant. Everything is an RNG drop. For that hyperion
weapon, You need at least 4 items to make it good, and their rng drop rates are as follows.. 0.109%, 0.145%,
0.145%, 0.145%. And this is per dungeon, and dungeons can take 5-10 minutes to complete. So for the rarest item,
which a 0.109% drop rate, thats 1 in 900 dungeons. Wow. By the way, this is a weapon that you need for any of
the endgame/cool content in the game. By this point, you probably understand that this game is super coin
reliant. You need coins for everything.
The toxicity is pretty expected. It's a game with a player base of 10-19 year olds, you already know they are
gonna be the worst people ever. You will get gatekept for the dumbest stuff. You don't have this gear? Kicked.
You don't have a high enough skill level? Kicked. You don't know the shadow fury ballsack stonk cheese method?
Kicked.
I think for me personally, I also gave up on skyblock since I was starting to get exhausted and life was
changing. It was right around the end of covid. Skyblock also was just too slow with making changes. They added
all the things I would've loved in 2021 into the game years after I quit. I mentioned that I did make returns,
and that was around 2022, where I somehow miraculously timed getting back into hypixel skyblock with the lowest
my mental health was. I played some in 2023 too.
I do feel sentimental about this game quite a bit since I played it in middle school, but quitting was pretty
healthy. The game used to be me and my friends' entire lives. We would get into dumbass arguments over the game.
Bro one of my friends forced another friend to farm for him. Covid was detrimental to these young kids' lives.
Well I mean, I can't blame everything on Covid. If I was a bit brighter, I would have limited myself from being
in discord and just sat on Youtube and video games. I would've been cringe, but I feel like that would've been
better for me. Remembering when I was an active user in twitch streamer's discord makes me cringe so much. Man
I'm so glad I didn't get groomed.
